We're thrilled to be leading Enagain's NZ$2.5m seed round, investing NZ$1.5m alongside Icehouse Ventures and K1W1. Enagain is a University of Canterbury spinout that turns waste gas from landfills into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), a drop-in replacement to fossil natural gas that can be sold straight into the same infrastructure and the same customers.

Gas is one of the hardest parts of the energy system to replace, underpinning the high-intensity heat that cement, steel, glass and asphalt production depend on. Enagain's technology cleans raw biogas from landfills and wastewater digesters, stripping out carbon dioxide and impurities to leave a product pure enough to sell as natural gas. It's a single-stage, low-capex, low-opex process built around a novel circular heating step.

Enagain is targeting smaller landfill sites that today are stuck flaring their gas because the incumbent upgrading technologies only stack up at large scale.

Enagain isn't subsidy-dependent, it's building toward a cost of production that competes with fossil gas on price alone, which is the kind of climate technology that can scale regardless of the policy environment. Co-founders Dr Matthew Cowan (CEO) and Dr Gavin Hedley (CTO) have spent seven years developing the technology together, from Hedley's PhD research through to a working prototype now running at Christchurch's Burwood landfill in partnership with the Christchurch City Council and Pioneer Energy. This raise will allow Enagain to complete a full-scale commercial demonstration unit at a second site in Nelson, for which they have secured signed offtake.

We came to know Matthew and Gavin through Aurora Climate Lab, the accelerator we help run with CreativeHQ and Fractal Climate. We came away impressed by a rare combination of tenacity, technology and timing. Enagain has a genuinely novel, patent-protected process, a large and growing market (the existing RNG market alone is forecast to double to over US$30bn by 2033, with landfills the single biggest source), and two founders with the technical depth and commercial experience to build a company around it.

We're excited to back Matthew, Gavin and the wider Enagain team as they build a low-cost RNG producer.
